Just so you know I'm going to add something to classic rock, then pick up where I left off.
Classic Rock(update)
Tom Petty (and the Heartbreakers)(v,g,o)
The reason I put "and the Heartbreakers" in parentheses is because Tom Petty didn't always preform with them. Tom Petty made some great music back in the day but the modern generation has seemed to forget him. A singer and guitarist, he has reached superstar status. While their first album was more successful in Britain then America, their second album was a top 40 hit and their next two albums went platinum. He is truly a talented musician.

Van Halen(g)
"Eddie Van Halen may have been born with a guitar in his hand, but he probably didn't learn to play it until he was two"-God of Rock, Guitar Hero 3
Yeah, right...
Eddie Van Halen is one of the most influential and respected guitarists of the 80s. Van Halen is one of the most stereotypical bands ever. They were loud and obnoxious, their songs were about sex, drugs, and cars, and they were always fighting backstage. And it was AWESOME! Originally the band consisted David Lee Roth with his one-of-a-kind voice on vocals, Eddie on guitar(naturally), Michael Anthony with his Jack Daniels bass(which I saw at the Hall of Fame), and Alex Van Halen on drums. However, because of musical and social differences, Roth left the band in 1985. He was replaced by up-and-coming solo artist Sammy Hagar. But, eventually, Hagar left the band on the account he caught LSS(Lead Singer Syndrome, which, according to Eddie, is the same disease that afflicted Roth(lol)). When it came time to induct Van Halen in to the hall of fame the only inductees were ex-members Hagar and Anthony( while on tour with Roth, Anthony was booted in favor of Eddie's son Wolfgang(Edward it's your word. Can you spell nepotism?). Recently it was confirmed that Neversoft has started work on Guitar Hero: Van Halen. But no matter what happens the will always have been awesome!(SUBLIMINALMESSAGESAMMYHAGARISAHACKSUBLIMINALMESSAGE)

Nirvana(v,g)
The epitome of grunge, Nirvana consisted of Kurt Cobain(heard of him) on guitar and vocals, Dave Grohl(heard of him), its longest lasting drummer, and Krist Novoselic(Who?) on bass.
From their first album Bleach to the genre-launching Nevermind, Nirvana's music is world renowned. Cobain was known for his hatred of anything commercial or phony, which is why grunge rockers, Nirvana especially, are known for their unkempt appearance(which is why the style of music is known as grunge) and lack of theatrics at live preformances. Unfortunately(Oh my god, another musician dies?!!), in the grand tradition of many a rocker before him, Kurt Cobain, in a mixture of alcohol and depression, kills himself with shotgun wound to the head.
After Kurt's death, Grohl went on to front the Foo Fighters and Novoselic(Still, who?) went on to become a senator. Nirvana has influenced many musicians and still will.

Alice In Chains(g,o)
The most "metal" of the Seattle-sound(fancy name for grunge) bands, Alice In Chains has a influence all their own. After the break-up of his hair metal band Alice N' Chainz, vocalist Layne Staley was without a band. So he stayed with his friend that he met while touring, guitarist Jerry Cantrell, who had an apartment in Seattle. Layne joined Cantrell's band Diamond Lie. They eventually changed their name to Alice In Chains. Together, with drummer Sean Kinney and bassist Mike Starr(Yes, that is his name.), they became one of the most successful grunge-era bands, racking up six Grammy nominations and releasing the first ever number one EP, Jar of Flies. Unfortunately, Layne became a recluse and an addict. While the band never actually disbanded, they went on an extended hiatus after Staley overdosed on heroin and died. The band has come out of hiatus and found new singer and rhythm guitarist William DuVall and new bassist Mike Inez(former Ozzy Osbourne bassist). They are going to release a new album on September 29 of this year.
